Pig-tailed Macaque

China has some 450 mammal species. More than 90 species, including the Giant Panda, Golden Monkey, Chinese River Dolphin, Takin and Asiatic Elephant, have been listed as national key-protected wildlife and are under close State protection. The government has imported some species, such as David's Deer and Wild Horse, which had become extinct in the wild in China, from foreign countries for breeding purposes. Many nature reserves have also been established to protect valuable mammals.

Pig-tailed Macaque

Distribution: southern areas of China's Yunnan Province, India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Sumatra

The body length of Pig-tailed Macaque is about 60 cm, with a tail 15-18cm long. They weigh 11-14kg and live in dense forest under the lead of a "king". Fruits are their mainfood, but they also eat insects, worms and birds' eggs. The normal lifespan is about 25 years. The males are ferocious.

They are listed as first grade nationally protected animals.
