Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area (UNESCO natural heritage site since 1992)
The Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area near Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province, which has an area of 264 sq km and over 3,000 peaks,is called a place of "800 beautiful streams." The streams never stop flowing, even during periods of drought. The unique quartzs and stone geology of Wulingyuan is rare both in China and the rest of the world. It has preserved the primitive features of the ancient plant communities of the Yangtze River valley, and the ancient ginkgo trees are called "living fossils." World-renowned for its grotesque peaks and stones, deep and secluded valleys, beautiful streams and karst caves, the Wulingyuan Scenic Spot is home to many items of scientific and tourism value.
