Old Town of Lijiang (UNESCO cultural heritage site since 1997)
The ancient city of Lijiang is located on a plateau 2,400 m above sea level, at the foot of Yulong (Jade Dragon) Snow Mountain in the Lijiang Naxi Autonomous Region of Yunnan Province. It dates from the end of the 12th century and has an area of 3.8 sq km. With neither the regular road network nor city walls, the city has buildings in a unique combination of the architecture of the Central Plains and the traditional architectural styles of the Bai and Tibetan ethnic groups. A stream flows past every household. Important parts of the local cultural heritage are the Dongba religion and its peculiar script, and the Baisha Murals.
