Mount Putuo, strictly speaking, is one of the Zhoushan Islands in Zhejiang Province, but it contains lush green mountains. As one of the four great Buddhist Mountains in China, Mount Putuo was dedicated to Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, by imperial decree in the 13th century. Mount Putuo, the fa- mous paradise haven was dubbed "Buddha Land in the Vast Sea" in the Song Dynasty (960 - 1 279). There are three well-known monasteries at Mount Putuo: Temple Puji (Universal Relief), Temple Huiji (Wisdom and Blessing), and Temple Fayu (Rain of Law). Some of the island's scenery, such as the Thou- sand-Pace Golden Sands and Potalaka Mountain, are very impressive. With a favorable climate in all seasons and picturesque views, Mount Putuo is not only a holy land for Buddhist followers but also a wonderful place for tourists.
